Rita and I are now at Day 14 of our…
Self-Isolation? Self-Quarantine? Social Distancing on Steroids. Shelter-in-Place. Chris Shanklin sent another idea from Naples (Florida, not Italy). House Arrest.
As of March 24, Mayor Quinton Lucas defined our current legal status. He issued a “Stay-At-Home” order for Kansas City and was joined by the surrounding counties. Continue reading
Today is Day 7 of social-distancing by Rita and Lonnie. Not from each other, but almost everyone else (exceptions: Rita’s trips for groceries and those folks we pass while walking Loose Park).
Lee Judge published a cartoon that captures this new reality (and gave me my title for this Hot Stove): Continue reading
Wow. Things are moving fast.
I’m not sure when the next Hot Stove will come out because…
I’m Going to the Mattresses: Like the Corleone family in The Godfather, I’m going to a hideout so the other gangster families can’t find me. Or a virus. Continue reading
NOTICE: This is not a regular Hot Stove post (i.e. baseball themed), but that’s the mailing list I am using (because it’s the only one I have). If you are on the list solely for baseball, feel free to hit delete and await my next email (although you might want to check out the songs at the end – some real gems). The primary purpose of this post is to update the other tags on the Lonnie’s Jukebox website. Kudos to son Brian who has done a superb job of building this website.
Royals pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Surprise, Arizona, on February 12. Rita and I headed to Arizona on February 15. Royals position players reported to Surprise on February 17. Rita and I returned to Kansas City on February 19. We had been in Tucson. Surprise! We were not at spring training. More on our trip in Lonnie’s Jukebox at the end of this post.
I wanted Parasite to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards last night. Thought it was unlikely. South Korean film with subtitles. It would be the first non-English film to be Best Picture. To my pleasant surprise, it won.
As if you did not know, the Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV.
Final score: Chiefs – XXXI, 49ers – XX.
With the ending of that game, we entered into a 9-day “Sports Gap” in Kansas City. The football season ended (magnificently) for the Chiefs on February 2. Royals catchers and pitchers report for spring training on February 12.
This seems like a good week to switch (temporarily) from baseball to football.
I’m not going to talk much about the current Chiefs. They are awesome, but well covered by the KC Star, The Athletic, etc. I’m going with nostalgia – the golden-oldies Chiefs who played at Municipal Stadium at 22nd and Brooklyn.
As we await Super Bowl Sunday…
What do the Beatles and Campy Campaneris have in common? Charlie Finley used each as a draw to Municipal Stadium at 22nd and Brooklyn. The Beatles on their North American tour in 1964 and Campy playing all nine positions in 1965. Who was the better draw? You will soon know.
